Resistance to Change
MMC Contractors has grown into one of the largest and most influential mechanical contractors in the country since launching in 1932. The Kansas City-based company used whiteboards for decades before transitioning to spreadsheets. And now, in the midst of overhauling its accounting software, the team was considering another shift in direction governing workforce management: cloud-based labor scheduling. But there were concerns that project managers could feel overwhelmed by the speed of change.
Success had made labor scheduling unwieldy with spreadsheets. It took too much time for managers to update and maintain the labor documents. The process was clunky, adding layers to communication between the office and field.
Integration with Viewpoint
The syncing of information allowed superintendents to instantly update projects in the field without having to create an email chain with the office. MMC was also able to assign permissions based on roles and responsibilities levels, and ensure that only those with the proper level of permission could make significant changes to labor schedules.
LaborChart and MMC created a plan that was tailored to the company’s labor force. MMC focused on small user groups to ensure that key people had critical knowledge of how the platform worked before opening it up to a majority of the team. LaborChart’s dashboard simplified the day-to-day management of projects by showing changes in real-time and letting superintendents balance the needs of current and future jobs. The platform also helped align expectations across multiple departments and eliminated the laborious process of continually tweaking or adjusting spreadsheets.
MMC also realized an unexpected benefit with regard to safety. The company’s safety department utilizes LaborChart for tracking safety requirements and trade certifications. The safety team is now able to easily manage certification updates and quickly ascertain who is a fit for a given job.
